Step 1 – Focus on Self care – Start and stick to self care activities like exercise, eating a balanced diet, engaging in a hobby, disconnecting from work during the weekends and engaging in activities you enjoy.
Step 2 – Take a Break – Burnout is likely a sign that you have too much on your plate. Taking time off is specially needed and critical when burnout affects you. Spending time in nature regularly will help alleviate acute stress.
Step 3 – Be Open to Change – It is difficult to envision a different life when your energy or motivation is at its lowest. While self care routines and mindfulness habits are beneficial, it is also important to look at bigger structural changes you can make – whether it is changing your job, reducing your work hours, negotiating a different set of responsibilities, or walking out of a toxic relationship.
Step 4 – Consult a Mental Health professional – The road to recovery for someone experiencing burnout will depend on its severity. For some, adopting meditation and mindfulness practices along with setting and enforcing boundaries maybe sufficient. While for others, it could be a good idea to consider seeking a therapist or life coach to help them help themselves.
